Treadmill vs. Exercise Bikes - the Pros and Cons

You already know that eating healthy and exercising regularly are important for losing weight, looking and feeling better and most importantly for your long-term health. In your quest to get in better shape, you may have decided to purchase a piece of home cardio equipment. The most popular are treadmills and stationary bikes, but how do you decide which one to buy? What you need to focus on are safety, workout effectiveness and whether or not you will avoid boredom and continue using the equipment

    • If you find it difficult to walk 10 minutes on a treadmill but can easily ride for 20 minutes on an exercise bike, you will burn more calories per session on an exercise bike.

    • On upright exercise bikes, you may still have some trouble reading because you usually have to hold the handlebars to keep your balance.
    • Some people get bored with exercise bikes because they are not using their arms or any other part of their body than their legs.

Remember, for all aerobic exercises, you need a minimum of 20 minutes on any machine to get real benefit. If you don't have a heart monitor, a good rule of thumb is to sustain your activity at a point where you can carry on a conversation with some difficulty.

Either piece of equipment will help you in your quest for weight loss or improved health, but sticking with your option is the most important so choose the piece of equipment you are most likely to continue using. The best option is to purchase and use both, provided you have the space in your home and your budget.
